Tend to Your Heart: A Garden-Inspired Practice for Emotional Healing

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how healing doesn’t always look like big breakthroughs or dramatic shifts. Sometimes, it looks like pulling a single weed from your heart space. One breath. One softening. One moment of tending.
And maybe it’s because I’ve started something new in my own life — I’m planting my very first backyard vegetable garden this spring. Yes, tomatoes, basil, cucumbers and various Indian vegetables are happening. But what I didn’t expect was how deeply this process would connect to the way I teach and live yoga. It’s become a whole new expression of my off-the-mat practice.

And it reminded me of something I say often in class:Your heart is a garden. What are you growing there?
The Heart Chakra as a Garden
The Heart Chakra — Anahata — is the center of love, compassion, empathy, and connection. It’s where we receive and give love, where we store grief, and where so many of us carry invisible weight.
Like any good garden, your heart needs:
Nourishment
Breath
Light
And yes….weeding
Because let’s be honest: we all have weeds.Thoughts like “I’m not good enough,” or “I’ll never feel fully seen,” or “I have to do everything on my own.”They start small, but over time, they grow. They take up space. They block out the sun.
And just like tangled roots in a flower bed, they keep the good things — joy, love, connection — from taking hold.
Wounds, Calluses & Compassion
Here’s something I’ve realized, especially through my own healing:When we don’t clear space in the heart, old pain creates scar tissue. Emotional wounds harden into calluses. And those calluses, while they may have formed to protect us, can start to block the very nourishment we long for.
Love can be right in front of us… but we can’t absorb it if the soil is too hard.
So how do we soften? How do we create space to grow something new?
We start small.We breathe.We tend.
A Practice to Begin With
You don’t need a shovel or yoga mat for this.Just a moment of stillness.
Close your eyes.Imagine your heart as a garden. With each breath, gently pull one weed — one old belief or thought you’re ready to release.Send your breath to a tight or hardened space and soften it.Then, plant a new seed. Maybe it’s trust. Maybe it’s ease. Maybe it’s joy.
Water it with compassion.Let it be enough.
