For most of my adult life, I struggled with chronic pain that restricted my movements, making it difficult to flow with ease and confidence. As a child, I wasn’t athletic—I was the little girl with bows and dolls. The most active part of my day was playground time and PE, which, believe it or not, was my least favorite class!
As I transitioned into adulthood and motherhood, I quickly realized that sitting around wasn’t going to help me get back into my pre-pregnancy clothes. Determined to shed the extra baby weight, I started attending group aerobic classes and walking daily around my neighborhood. I cleaned up my diet, saying goodbye to Oreos and Chips Ahoy, and noticed that as my actions changed, so did my mindset. I wanted to be more active and began exploring various exercise programs: step aerobics (I was queen of step aerobics!), Billy Blanks kickboxing, jogging, and finally, I discovered yoga. It wasn’t until I embraced a consistent yoga practice that I found relief from the chronic pain in my low back, hips, and shoulders. Yoga not only improved my flexibility and strength but, most importantly, alleviated the constant nagging pain. The consistent practice of yoga also played a crucial role in helping me overcome a recent breast cancer diagnosis. I truly believe that my diagnosis could have been far worse if not for my dedication to yoga, meditation, and breathwork. These practices kept me mentally strong during doctor appointments and treatments, allowing me to support my loving family and hold space for their support in return.
Yoga for Chronic Pain is a unique practice that can address specific pain areas like the back, hips, and shoulders while also balancing the nervous system and helping us manage life’s stressors with ease. Through my personal journey of chronic pain and breast cancer treatments, I’ve developed a specific yoga session to share the benefits I experienced.
